Boys and Big Toys

The love that boys have for big toys starts early. If you had told me that boys were hard wired from birth to love all machines big and small I wouldn’t believe you.

I sat down for a nice quiet afternoon on the couch because the day before I really over exerted myself. The birds were chirping when suddenly the sound of construction machines started up. I looked out the window to discover the driveway being worked on. At first I was a tad peeved that my afternoon was going to be filled with loud machines but then I was sad that Adam was sleeping through it because I bet he would I’ve to watch them.

Adam woke up early from his nap and this was one of those rare times I was excited for that.

We sat down on the step and the excitement was apparent. Adam was pointing and asking what’s that? He sat for at least 45 minutes and just watched the trucks go back and forth, pointing and talking. He was grinning from ear to ear.

When the trucks went around the corner Adam ran to keep up with them. He was such a good boy just watching and keeping out of the way. I always tell him good boys are rewarded and Adam got the reward of his dreams.

As the asphalt roller was going back and forth and he was pointing and squealing with delight, the operator noticed and rolled the machine over to us. He asked Adam if he would like to go for a ride. So Adam and I hopped into the drivers seat while he sat beside and he let Adam drive it. The excitement in Adam’s eyes was priceless.

Our ride was over but every time our new friend rolled by Adam pointed and said help. It was adorable. When they cut a hole in the pavement Adam looked at me, looked back then pointed and exclaimed oops! I don’t think I’ve ever laughed that hard.

The construction workers honked their horns as they rolled by, they waved and smiled at Adam.

Two and a half hours later while there was still a flurry of activity the lawn maintenance team showed up and I had to take Adam inside.

Who knows, maybe one day Adam will have an asphalt roller to call his own.
